Starting Lineup

L. Díaz · D. Núñez · Salah · Wirtz · Mac Allister · Szoboszlai · Robertson · van Dijk · Gravenberch · J. Gomez · Alisson

Liverpool plays with a heavy focus on high pressing and verticality using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and strike quickly before the opposition can settle. By pushing many players forward, the team looks to control the middle of the pitch and suffocate opponents in their own half.

Alisson plays as a sweeping goalkeeper, often coming off his line to intercept long balls and act as an extra defender. The defensive unit operates with a high line, leaving van Dijk and Gravenberch to cover the space behind. Using his aerial strength and his ability to read the game, van Dijk holds the line and organizes the defence. Gravenberch acts as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back and carry the ball forward into the middle third.

A five man midfield block dominates the central zones. J. Gomez and Robertson sit deeper to protect the two center backs and pick up runners. Mac Allister and Szoboszlai operate in the central areas, with Mac Allister using his passing range to move the ball and Szoboszlai driving forward to link the lines. Wirtz plays as an attacking ten, searching for space between the lines to play through the midfield and create scoring chances.

The attacking unit uses three players to stretch the defence. L. Díaz and Salah act as inverted wingers who cut inside to shoot or combine in tight spaces. While Salah uses his clinical finishing and movement to find goals, L. Díaz uses his dribbling to beat his man. D. Núñez acts as a pressing centre-forward, constantly running at the back line to force mistakes and win the second ball. Wingers look to isolate wide players or get to the byline to cut it back.

Numerical superiority in the midfield allows the team to control the tempo of the game. Pressing high in coordinated waves makes it difficult for opponents to play out from the back. Liverpool also benefits from the speed of transition when winning the ball, allowing the front three to hit in behind on the transition and exploit the space behind the opposition.

This 2-5-3 formation is a high intensity lineup designed to dominate through aggressive ball winning and verticality. It is best suited for matches against teams that try to build play from the back or when chasing a game against a compact low block.
