Athletic focuses on a high press and direct verticality using a 4-2-4. This formation is built to stretch the defence and create constant pressure in the final third. The team looks to win the ball high up the pitch and attack the opposition with speed and intensity.

Unai Simón acts as the lone goalkeeper behind a back four. De Marcos plays as the right back and Yuri operates as the left back to provide width. In the middle of the defence, Vivian and Yeray form the central pairing to defend zonally. Yeray provides aerial strength and stability while Vivian works to cover space and intercept passes. The defensive unit stays compact to prevent teams from playing through the lines.

The midfield operates with a double pivot consisting of De Galarreta and Vesga. De Galarreta acts as the deep lying playmaker who tries to find the feet of the striker and recycle possession. Vesga plays a more physical role to shield the defence and win the second ball. These two players must cover a lot of ground to connect the defensive and attacking lines when the team plays out from the back.

Athletic uses four attackers to pin the last defender. Williams and Williams Jr play as wide wingers who hug the touchline to stretch the pitch. They look to cut inside or deliver crosses into the box. Sancet and Guruzeta operate as a two forward partnership. Sancet works to link up play between the lines while Guruzeta acts as a pressing centre forward to force a long ball from the opposition.

This lineup offers significant advantages in terms of offensive pressure. The team can create wide overloads when the full backs push up to overlap the wingers. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves because of the four players positioned near the opposition defence. This forces mistakes and allows the team to hit in behind on the transition.

The 4-2-4 formation allows Athletic to dominate the attacking third through constant pressure. It is a high risk lineup best suited for matches where the team needs to break down a low block through sheer volume of attacks.
