Starting Lineup

Williams · Lebusa · Mudau · Mokoena · Modiba · Morena · Rayners · Sales · Lunga · Ribeiro · Zwane

Sundowns look to control the game through heavy possession and high pressure using a 3-4-3 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the ball and pin the opponent back in their own half. The team focuses on staying compact while playing through the lines to create chances in the final third.

Williams acts as the goalkeeper to start the build up play from the back. The back three consists of Lunga, Lebusa, and Mudau who play in a narrow defensive block. Lebusa acts as the central ball playing defender, while Lunga and Mudau provide cover to the sides. When the team loses the ball, the defenders step up to squeeze the space and win it back high up the pitch.

The midfield operates with two central players and two wide midfielders to control the tempo. Mokoena and Modiba form a central pairing to dictate play and connect the defence to the attack. Mokoena works to recycle possession while Modiba looks to carry the ball forward into the half spaces. On the flanks, Zwane and Morena act as wide midfielders who can push high to support the front three or drop back to defend.

Sundowns use three attackers to stretch the defence across the pitch. Sales and Ribeiro act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create central threats, leaving space for the wide midfielders to exploit. Rayners leads the line as a pressing centre forward to force a long ball from the opposition. The front line works in combinations to play one twos and find the feet of the striker in tight spaces.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads when Zwane and Morena push forward to join the attackers. The central trio of Mokoena, Modiba, and Lebusa allows for numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. This setup also enables the team to press in pairs to win the ball back quickly after losing it.

This 3-4-3 lineup relies on high intensity to suffocate the opposition in their own half. It is a formation best suited for games where Sundowns want to dominate a lower block opponent through constant pressure.
