Germany plays a highly vertical and aggressive game with a 2-5-3 formation. Sammer and Matthäus operate in the half spaces, with Matthäus known for his incredible engine to drive the ball forward and cover ground. F. Walter sits in the hole as the advanced playmaker, looking to play through the lines and find the attackers in dangerous areas.

Germany attacks with three forwards, creating constant pressure on the opposition back line. G. Müller acts as the main striker, using his legendary clinical finishing and movement to arrive late into the box. Seeler and Rummenigge play wide, with both players looking to cut inside to support the central attack. This formation creates many combinations in tight spaces and allows the team to exploit runs in behind during quick transitions and counter at pace.

A primary tactical advantage of this formation is the massive numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it very difficult for opponents to win the second ball. The team can also press high in coordinated waves because of the intense work rate of Sammer and Matthäus. Furthermore, the ability of Beckenbauer to move forward provides an extra passing lane to split the defence with a through ball and catch the opposition out of position.

This 2-5-3 lineup is a heavy attacking formation designed to dominate territory and control the tempo. It is best suited for games where Germany can use their midfield power to pin the opponent deep in their own half.
