RB Salzburg Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Krätzig · Blank · Caufriez · Capaldo · Konaté · Ratkov · Vertessen · Gloukh · Bidstrup · Dedic · SchlagerRB Salzburg focuses on a high press and heavy verticality through a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup aims to overwhelm the opposition in their own half by using a high number of bodies in advanced positions to win the ball back quickly. By committing so many players forward, RB Salzburg looks to punish teams immediately upon winning possession in the attacking third.
Schlager operates as the goalkeeper behind a narrow defensive duo. Caufriez and Blank form the central defensive pairing, playing in a very high line to squeeze the space. These two central defenders must be ready to cover large areas of grass behind them to deal with any long balls. Because there are only two defenders, they rely on the midfield to protect the central areas and prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.
The midfield operates in a box style with two holding players and two attacking midfielders. Dedic and Krätzig act as the double pivot to shield the back two and recycle possession. Dedic and Krätzig must work hard to track back when the team loses the ball. Ahead of them, Bidstrup and Capaldo occupy the half spaces to drive forward with the ball. Bidstrup and Capaldo act as the engine, connecting the defensive block to the front four by carrying the ball into the final third.
In the attacking phase, the team utilizes four forwards to stretch the defence. Vertessen and Konaté act as wide wingers who stay high to provide width. Vertessen and Konaté look to isolate defenders in one on one situations near the touchline. Gloukh and Ratkov operate as a central partnership, with Gloukh often dropping deep to link play while Ratkov acts as the physical presence to find the feet of the striker. This front four works to press the opposition back line and create runs in behind.
The main tactical strengths of this formation are the ability to press high in coordinated waves and create numerical superiority in the attacking half. By using a 2-4-4, RB Salzburg can quickly overload the opponent's defensive line. This makes them very dangerous in transition when they can break quickly before the opposition can settle into a defensive block.
This formation is built for a high intensity game that relies on winning the ball high up the pitch. It is best suited for matches against teams that struggle to play out from the back under pressure.
