Juventus Football Formation
Starting Lineup
C. Ronaldo · Nedved · Zidane · R. Baggio · Platini · Pirlo · Chiellini · Thuram · Cannavaro · Scirea · BuffonJuventus seeks to dictate the tempo and control the ball with a 2-5-3. The tactical identity relies on heavy central dominance to suffocate the opponent in their own half. This lineup is designed to push the opposition back through a high line and overwhelming numbers in the center of the pitch.
Buffon guards the goal while the two central defenders operate far from his line. Scirea and Cannavaro must play as ball playing defenders to progress the ball from the back. While Scirea often drops to collect the ball and start the build up, Cannavaro stays closer to the striker to deny the turn and win the header. Because there are only two defenders in this formation, they must hold a high line and be ready to sprint back to cover any long balls or runs in behind.
The midfield engine room is where Juventus exerts most of its influence. Chiellini and Thuram form a double pivot to shield the center and win the second ball. Pirlo uses his passing range to switch play and find teammates in advanced positions. Platini works alongside him to drive the ball forward and link the defensive and attacking lines. Zidane plays as the attacking ten, finding pockets of space to play through the lines and deliver the final pass.
The front three aim to stretch the defense and create scoring chances through varied movements. Nedved plays wide on the left to spread the field and whip it in, while R. Baggio operates on the right and looks to cut inside to find space. C. Ronaldo stays central as the main striker, using his movement to pin the last defender and attack the near post. They work to combine in tight spaces and exploit the space created by the midfield to hit in behind on the transition.
A core strength of this formation is the numerical superiority in the midfield. Having five players allows Juventus to recycle possession and dominate the center of the pitch. The team can also press high in coordinated waves to win the ball back high up the pitch. This pressure forces the opponent to play long and allows the defensive duo to intercept the ball and start a quick attack.
This 2-5-3 formation is built for aggressive, ball dominant play. It is best used when facing opponents who play a low block and allow the midfield to take control of the game.
