Starting Lineup

L. Díaz · D. Núñez · Salah · Wirtz · Mac Allister · Szoboszlai · Robertson · van Dijk · Gravenberch · Alisson · J. Gomez

Liverpool aims to overwhelm opponents through a vertical and high pressing style of play. They use a 2-5-3 formation to dominate the pitch and restrict the opponent's time on the ball. This formation is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and attack with speed to catch the defence out of position.

Alisson operates as a sweeper keeper to manage the large space behind the high line. The defensive unit consists of two central defenders, van Dijk and J. Gomez, who must hold the line and cover the wide areas. van Dijk uses his aerial strength and positional awareness to intercept long balls and win the header. J. Gomez must stay alert to track back and cover when the opposition hits in behind on the transition. Together, they work to squeeze the space and keep the team compact to deny the turn to attackers.

The midfield is built to control the center and provide constant passing options. Gravenberch and Robertson play as deep midfielders to protect the two defenders and recycle possession. Mac Allister and Szoboszlai act as two eights who drive forward to carry the ball forward and connect the defensive and attacking lines. Robertson also uses his position to provide width and overlap the winger to stretch the defence. Wirtz acts as an attacking ten who finds space between the lines to play through the lines and create chances.

The attacking line consists of three players who pin the last defender. D. Núñez acts as a pressing centre forward to lead the hunt from the front and disrupt the play. L. Díaz and Salah play as inverted wingers who cut inside to threaten the goal. Salah is known for his clinical finishing and his ability to find space in the box. Players look to combine in tight spaces and use runs in behind to break the defence and create scoring opportunities.

This formation provides massive numerical superiority in the middle. Having Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, and Wirtz in close proximity allows Liverpool to compress the midfield and win the second ball. A high press in coordinated waves makes it difficult for opponents to play out from the back. This lineup also allows for quick transitions to exploit wide areas when the defence is stretched.

This 2-5-3 lineup is designed for total aggression and high intensity. It is best suited for games where Liverpool want to force a long ball and dominate the opponent in their own half.
