Barnsley seeks to play a defensive and compact brand of football using a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting the opposition on the break. The team relies on staying organized and squeezing the space between the lines to deny the opponent time on the ball.

Shahriar Moghanlou guards the goal while the back five maintains a narrow defensive block. Dal Varshanovic and Reza Shekari act as the central defenders, with Varshanovic covering the space behind while Shekari battles for aerial strength in the box. Nollahi Yakharji occupies the left side of the back three to provide cover, while Torabi Yakharji operates as a right wing back to provide width. Aston Orounov works as the left wing back, tasked to push up and support the attack while tracking back to help the defense. This unit functions to protect the central areas and force play to the wings.

The midfield functions as a flat four to protect the defensive line. Arife Aqasi and Kanani Zadegan sit in the center to protect the back five, with Zadegan looking to win the second ball and Aqasi working to intercept passes. Milad Mohammadi plays on the left to support the wing back, while Hadarjonai occupies the right side to help the transition. This midfield group works to compress the midfield and ensure they do not get bypassed easily.

Barnsley uses a lone striker, Payam Niaymand, to lead the line. Niaymand is tasked to hold up the ball and act as a target man to bring the midfielders into play. The wide players, Milad Mohammadi and Hadarjonai, stay wide to stretch the defence during transitions. The team looks to play long to Niaymand or use quick combinations to break quickly once the ball is won. The goal is to create runs in behind the opponent's high line through direct play.

This formation offers great compactness when defending in a low block. The use of wing backs like Aston Orounov and Torabi Yakharji allows for wide overloads when the team moves from a defensive stance into an attacking one. By staying narrow, the team makes it difficult for opponents to play through the center.

The 5-4-1 formation makes Barnsley a very difficult side to break down in deep game situations. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession and allow the side to counter at pace.
