SHAHRUDİN (MAHAMMADALİYEV) · BAHLUL (MUSTAFAZADA) · ANTON (KRYVOTSİUK) · TORAL (BAYRAMOV) · ABBAS (HÜSEYNOV) · TAŞKIN (İLTER) · EMİN (MAHMUDOV) · ALEKSEY (ISAYEV) · NARİMAN (AKHUNDZADA) · MAHİR (EMRELİ) · MUSA (QURBANLY)

Azerbaijan looks to play a direct and counter attacking style of football within a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup focuses on being hard to break down while looking to catch the opposition on the break when they lose possession. The team is built to sit in a compact block and use the width of the pitch to stretch the game during transitions.

SHAHRUDİN guards the goal as the last line of defense. In front of him, a flat back four provides the primary defensive unit. ABBAS acts as the right back to hold the flank, while TORAL operates as the left back. The central defenders, BAHLUL and ANTON, are tasked with defending zonally and winning headers to clear the lines. This back four works together to maintain a narrow defensive block, ensuring that the space between the lines remains minimal for the opposition to exploit.

The midfield consists of a five man unit that covers the entire width of the pitch. TAŞKIN sits in the single pivot role to shield the defense and collect the ball from the back four. ALEKSEY and EMİN operate as the two central midfielders, with ALEKSEY tasked to drive forward with the ball and EMİN working to win the second ball in central areas. On the flanks, MAHİR and NARİMAN act as wide midfielders who provide width and are expected to track back to help the full backs. This midfield group connects the defense to the attack by recycling possession or hitting quick passes forward.

The attacking structure relies on a lone striker, MUSA, who acts as the focal point for the team. MUSA must hold up the ball to allow the wide players and central midfielders to move up the pitch. When Azerbaijan wins the ball back high up the pitch, MAHİR and NARİMAN look to push forward to support the attack. The aim is to create runs in behind the opposition defense through quick transitions. The forwards press the opposition back line to force a long ball and regain control.

This formation offers several tactical advantages for Azerbaijan. The five man midfield provides great compactness when defending, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the center. By using MAHİR and NARİMAN wide, the team can also create wide overloads to exploit the flanks during a counter attack. This setup allows the team to stay organized and transition quickly from a mid-block into an attacking phase.

Azerbaijan utilizes this 4-5-1 formation to remain defensively solid and strike on the break. It is a setup best suited for matches against stronger opponents where controlling the game through possession is not possible.
