Chelsea Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Cucurella · James · Colwill · Badiashile · Caicedo · E. Fernández · Nkunku · Palmer · Sancho · P. Neto · SánchezChelsea plays a very vertical style of football using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup tries to dominate the middle of the pitch and win it back high up the pitch. They want to squeeze the space and use a high press to force long balls from the opposition.
Sánchez acts as the last line of defense. The back line consists of a very narrow pair of central defenders, Colwill and Badiashile. Colwill acts as a ball playing defender who can pass through the lines, while Badiashile provides cover. Because there are only two center backs, they must hold a high line and step up to catch runners. The defensive unit functions as a tight block that relies on the midfield to protect the area behind them.
The midfield functions as a five man block that controls the center. Caicedo and E. Fernández sit as a double pivot to shield the defense. Cucurella and James act as the wide midfielders who occupy the half spaces to stop breaks. Palmer operates as an attacking ten behind the striker to create with his passing range in tight spaces. This midfield group links the two defenders to the attackers by recycling possession and playing short from the back.
The attack features three players across the front. Nkunku operates as a pressing centre-forward to hunt the ball. Sancho stays wide as a winger to stretch the defence using his dribbling, while P. Neto plays as an inverted winger who cuts inside to find pockets of space. These players look to hit in behind on the transition or combine in tight spaces. The movements are designed to create runs in behind and allow the midfielders to arrive late into the box.
A major strength of this formation is the numerical superiority in midfield. Having five players in the middle allows Chelsea to win the second ball and control the tempo. Such pressing is done in coordinated waves. This forces the opponent to play long and makes it hard for them to build play from the back.
This 2-5-3 lineup is built for teams that want to dominate possession and play with a high line. It is best suited for matches against opponents that struggle to bypass a crowded midfield.
