Chelsea looks to stay compact and defend in a low block. This 5-4-1 formation is built to be defensively solid and wait for the right moment to break quickly. The team aims to deny space in the central areas and force the opposition to play wide.

Petrovic stays on the line to command the area. The defensive unit uses a back five that stays narrow to protect the goal. Kim holds the center as the main stopper. Colwill and Caicedo play as the wide centre-backs, with Colwill acting as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back. James acts as an attacking wing back on the right to provide width, while Cucurella works as the left wing back. The whole back line is ready to sit deep and defend zonally.

A midfield four sits in front of the defenders to block passing lanes. Enzo acts as the single pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. Palmer plays in a central role, using his passing range to split the defence with a through ball. Rodrygo and Estevao complete the midfield line. Rodrygo can drive forward with the ball to link the lines, while Estevao uses his energy to press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch.

The attack uses a lone striker, Delap, who plays as a pressing centre-forward to bother the opposition back line. When Chelsea wins the ball, they look to hit in behind on the transition. James and Cucurella push up to provide width, which creates space for the midfielders to combine in tight spaces. The team tries to spread wide and use the wingers to find the feet of the striker. Delap will hold up the ball to allow Palmer and Rodrygo to arrive late into the box.

One major advantage is the compactness when defending. The narrow block makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the lines. Another strength is the speed of transition. Once the midfield wins the ball, players like James and Rodrygo can carry the ball forward to catch the opponent out of position. The formation allows for wide overloads when the wing backs push up to support the attack.

This 5-4-1 formation provides a very strong defensive foundation. It is best suited for facing teams that want to dominate possession where Chelsea can sit deep and counter at pace.
