Juventus aims to dominate the ball and squeeze the pitch through a highly aggressive 2-5-3 formation. Buffon sits between the posts to organize the defense and use his presence to claim crosses. The defensive line consists of a narrow pair of central defenders, Bonucci and Cannavaro. Bonucci plays as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back, while Cannavaro uses his ability to intercept and cover space to keep the line high. Because there are only two central defenders, the unit must rely on the midfielders to squeeze the space in front of them to prevent long balls.

The midfield is a five-man block that controls the center of the pitch. Pirlo works as a deep lying playmaker with a wide passing range to switch play and find teammates in tight spaces. Thuram and Chiellini form a double pivot to protect the two defenders and win the second ball. Marchisio connects the defensive and attacking lines by carrying the ball forward into the half spaces. Zidane plays as an attacking ten in the hole, using his vision to play through the lines and serve the forwards.

The front line uses three attackers to stretch the defence. Trezeguet acts as a target man to hold up the ball and attack the far post. Nedved and Del Piero play as wide attackers who look to cut inside and create chaos. Nedved uses his immense stamina to track back and help the midfield when possession is lost. Del Piero works to find pockets of space to receive on the half-turn and combine in tight spaces. The attack is designed to create runs in behind and deliver crosses from wide areas.

One major advantage is the numerical superiority in the middle of the park. By playing five midfielders, Juventus can easily bypass the midfield of the opponent and dominate possession. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads, as the midfielders and wingers can combine to isolate defenders one on one. The team can also break quickly when they win it back high up the pitch, using the speed of their forwards.

This formation is best suited for a dominant side that wants to suffocate the opposition with possession. It works most effectively against teams that sit deep and struggle to deal with high pressure.
