This formation is built to strike quickly in transition to catch the opposition out of position. The team aims to stay compact when defending and use the width of the pitch to stretch the defence when they have the ball. By playing with a high line, Chelsea can squeeze the space and force a long ball from the opponent.
Diego Costa plays in goal to manage the defensive line and command his area. The back five consists of Fabregas, Lukaku, and Hazard in the central positions. Fabregas acts as a ball playing defender to start attacks from the back, while Lukaku and Hazard defend zonally and work to win the header. Gotze and Willian act as attacking wing backs, pushing high to provide width and overlap the winger when the team attacks. They must track back quickly to prevent being caught out on the break.
The midfield features a double pivot with Otamendi and Cheillini. Otamendi sits deeper to shield the defence and cut off the passing lane to the strikers. Cheillini is tasked to carry the ball forward and connect the defensive unit to the attack. Together, they work to win the second ball and recycle possession to keep the pressure on the opponent. They must also be ready to pick up runners coming from deep to maintain the mid-block.
In the attacking phase, the team uses three attackers. Pique plays as an inverted winger on the right to cut inside and create space, while Thiago Silva operates on the left to stay wide and stretch the defence. Courtouis plays as a lone striker to hold up the ball and lay it off. The movement is designed to create runs in behind and allow the wingers to whip it in toward the central area for a finish.
One major advantage is the ability to press high in coordinated waves with the front three. The formation also creates wide overloads because Gotze and Willian can push up the flanks to support the attackers. This allows the team to pin the last defender and create space for players to arrive late into the box. The defensive solidity of the back five makes them very difficult to break down.
This 5-2-3 formation relies on a strong defensive block and rapid counter attacks. It is best suited for facing teams that commit many players forward and leave large gaps in the wide areas.
