Starting Lineup

Kawaguchi · Ihara · Nakazawa · Uchida · Nagatomo · Hasebe · Honda · Nakata · Nakamura · Miura · Kamamoto

Japan focuses on a direct and reactive style of play using a five three two formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and strike quickly when the opposition loses control. The team looks to protect the central areas and use the width of the pitch during transitions to catch teams out of position.

Kawaguchi guards the goal while a back five holds a narrow defensive block. Hasebe, Nakazawa, and Ihara form a central trio to defend the box and win headers. Hasebe acts as the anchor to cover the space behind his partners. Nagatomo plays as an attacking wing back on the left, using his immense stamina to push up and track back. Uchida operates on the right side, providing width and looking to overlap the midfield when the ball is moved wide.

The midfield features a three man midfield with a carrier to control the center. Nakata sits deep to recycle possession and switch play to the flanks. Honda works as an attacking midfielder with a great passing range to play through the lines. Nakamura links the play between the defence and the attackers, moving into half spaces to receive the ball on the half turn. This group works together to squeeze the space and win the second ball in the middle of the pitch.

Japan uses two forwards in a partnership to challenge the opposition back line. Miura acts as a mobile striker who can drop into the hole to link play, while Kamamoto plays as a target man to win headers and hold up the ball. The attack is built through the wing backs, Nagatomo and Uchida, who aim to get to the byline and whip it in for the strikers. The front two press from the front to force a long ball and win possession high up the pitch.

The formation offers great compactness when defending in a mid block. Japan can use wide overloads from Nagatomo and Uchida to stretch the defence during a counter at pace. The ability to shift between a deep block and a sudden vertical attack makes them difficult to pin down.

This five three two lineup provides a solid base for a team that relies on defensive solidity and speed of transition. It is most effective against teams that push many players forward and leave gaps behind their defenders.
