This lineup aims to dominate the ball and squeeze the pitch to keep the opposition pinned in their own half. The team looks to play through the thirds with short passes, using their technical ability to move the ball from the back into the final third.
In the defensive unit, the goalkeeper starts the build up by playing short from the back. A flat back four protects the area, with the LCB and RCB acting as ball playing defenders who can step into midfield to create numerical superiority. The RB and LB act as wide defenders who push up to provide width, while the central defenders focus on holding the line and defending zonally to cover any gaps left behind.
The midfield operates with a three man midfield with a carrier to link the lines. The DM sits in front of the back four to shield the defence and win the second ball. The LCM and CM act as inverted eights, working to press aggressively to win the ball high and occupying the half spaces. This group works to recycle possession and ensure the team can always find a way to progress through the thirds when the opposition tries to sit deep.
Attacking the opposition is done through three attackers across the front. The CF acts as a pressing centre-forward to force long balls from the opponent, while the RW and LW act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create central presence. This movement creates space for the wide defenders to overlap the winger and provide crosses. The forwards look to combine in tight spaces to find the feet of the striker or play a one-two to break the line.
This Sundowns formation offers great control through numerical superiority in midfield. The ability to press high in coordinated waves makes it difficult for opponents to play out from the back. By using inverted wingers, the team also creates opportunities to isolate wide players in one on one situations when the opposition defense shifts.
The 4-3-3 lineup is built to dominate possession and apply heavy pressure. It is best suited for games where Sundowns face opponents that allow them to control the tempo and play through the lines.
