West Ham focuses on a high press and direct transitions using a 4-3-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and strike quickly. The team looks to use the physical presence of their forwards and the speed of their wide players to punish opponents in transition.

Alphonse Areola stands between the posts to command the area. The defense works as a flat back four where Aaron Wan-Bissaka acts as a defensive full back to protect the flank. Emerson provides more width as an attacking full back to overlap the winger. In the middle, Maximilian Kilman and Konstantinos Mavropanos form a central pairing, with Mavropanos being dominant in the air and Kilman acting as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back.

The midfield relies on a three-man midfield with a carrier and a specialist to control the center. Edson Álvarez plays as the single pivot to shield the defense and break up play. Tomas Soucek provides much needed height and works to win the second ball in the middle of the park. Lucas Paquetá operates as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to create through the lines and find the feet of the attackers. This unit connects the defensive line to the front three by recycling possession and finding pockets of space.

The attacking unit uses a lone striker in Niclas Füllkrug, who acts as a target man to hold up the ball and win headers. On the flanks, Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen play as inverted wingers who cut inside to threaten the goal. This movement allows the team to create runs in behind and create overloads in central areas. The forwards press the opposition back line to force a long ball, allowing the defenders to regain control.

West Ham finds success through the ability to press high in coordinated waves. The presence of Tomas Soucek and Edson Álvarez provides stability, while the team can exploit wide areas through the movement of Mohammed Kudus. This formation also offers speed of transition when the ball is won back.

This 4-3-3 formation provides a balance of defensive solidity and attacking threat. It is best suited for matches against teams that play a high line or leave space behind their midfield.
