Starting Lineup

Mateta · Mbeumo · Amad · Cunha · Dorgu · B. Fernandes · Onana · Heaven · Yoro · Dalot · Lammens

Manchester United relies on a vertical identity to catch opponents off guard using a 5-3-2 formation. This Man Utd lineup focuses on sitting deep and playing quickly when the ball is won. The intention is to use the space left by an advancing opposition to strike with pace and precision.

Lammens stays on the line to protect the goal and organise the defence. The back five provides a narrow defensive block that is hard to penetrate. Yoro and Onana serve as the central defenders, with Yoro acting as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back. B. Fernandes provides cover alongside them to ensure the unit remains solid. On the flanks, Dalot and Heaven act as attacking wing backs, pushing high to provide width and delivering crosses into the box.

A three man midfield links the defence to the attack. Cunha sits in the middle to connect the lines, often dropping deep to receive the ball from the defenders. Dorgu and Mbeumo act as the driving force, with Dorgu pressing aggressively to win it back high up the pitch and Mbeumo carrying the ball forward into the half spaces. This trio works to squeeze the space in the centre and protect the back line during opposition attacks.

The attacking unit utilizes two forwards to stretch the defence. Mateta works as a pressing centre forward to disrupt the opponent, while Amad looks to make runs in behind the defenders. The attack is built through combinations in transition, where the wing backs can overlap to create wide overloads. Mateta can hold up the ball to lay it off for Amad to charge into the box and score.

One main strength of this formation is the compactness when defending in a low block. Having three central defenders makes the team difficult to break down through the middle. Another advantage is the ability to hit in behind on the transition, using the speed of the front two and the width of the wing backs to exploit open space when the opponent is out of position.

This 5-3-2 formation is built for teams that prefer to counter at pace. It is ideally suited for games against sides that play with a very high line and high levels of possession.
