Ajax relies on a high press and quick transitions within a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and strike fast before the opposition can reset. The formation uses the width of the pitch to stretch the defence and create gaps in the middle.

AANKOOP starts in goal to anchor the backline. The defensive unit operates as a back five with Mokio sitting centrally to hold the line. Sutalo plays as the right centre back to cover the space behind the wing back, while Baas acts as the left centre back to provide support. Gaaei and Hato play as attacking wing backs to provide width. Gaaei pushes up the right to overlap the winger, while Hato carries the ball forward from the left. This formation allows the defenders to defend zonally while remaining ready to step up to squeeze the space.

The midfield works as a two man unit consisting of Regeer and AANKOOP. Regeer acts as a carrier to drive the ball forward, while AANKOOP sits deeper to shield the defence and intercept passes. This pairing connects the back five to the front three. They work to recycle possession and play through the lines to find the attackers. When the team loses the ball, they trigger a press in a mid block to prevent the opponent from playing out from the back.

The attacking front three features Godts on the left, Traore on the right, and AANKOOP as the lone striker. Godts and Traore act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create chances, leaving space for the wing backs to overlap. AANKOOP works to hold up the ball and find the feet of the runners. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. The side aims to break quickly through combinations in tight spaces or by hitting in behind on the transition.

One major advantage for Ajax is the ability to create wide overloads. When Gaaei and Hato push up, they create two on one situations against the opposition full backs. The formation also provides great compactness when defending in a low block. The back five and the two midfielders can quickly shift to close down passing lanes and deny the pivot.

This 5-2-3 formation creates a heavy presence in both wide areas and central zones. It is best suited for matches against teams that play a high line and can be punished on the break.
