Cruz Azul Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Piovi · Ditta · Lira · Charly · Faravelli · (Paradela) · Jorge Sánchez · Rotondi · Sepúlveda · Bogusz · Omar CamposCruz Azul plays with a high intensity that aims to overwhelm the opposition. The team utilizes a 2-5-3 formation to maintain constant pressure. This lineup is designed to win the ball back high up the pitch and attack with a heavy presence in the final third.
Sepúlveda works in goal to protect the net. The defensive unit relies on a high line with only two central defenders, Bogusz and Jorge Sánchez. These two must be ready to step up to intercept passes and squeeze the space in front of them. Because the team plays with such a high line, Bogusz and Jorge Sánchez have to track back quickly if the opponent manages to break the first line of pressure.
The midfield is heavily populated to ensure control of the center. Paradela, acting as captain, and Faravelli operate as a double pivot to shield the defense. Ahead of them, Omar Campos, Rotondi, and Charly occupy the central areas. Paradela (C) works to deny the pivot of the opponent, while Omar Campos and Rotondi look to carry the ball forward into the attacking half. Charly acts as a link to help the team progress through the thirds and recycle possession effectively.
For the attack, Cruz Azul uses three forwards to stretch the opposition. Ditta plays on the left flank and Piovi stays wide on the right, both ready to cut inside to attack the box. Lira leads the line as the central striker to hold up the ball. This movement allows the team to pin the last defender and create chances through quick combinations or by trying to split the defence with a through ball.
A major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in the midfield. With five players in the center, the team can always find a passing lane to progress the ball. The team also excels at pressing in waves, using Lira and the wide players to trigger a press that works in unison with the midfield to win it back high up the pitch.
The 2-5-3 formation represents a brave and aggressive identity for Cruz Azul. This lineup is most effective when facing opponents that struggle to play short from the back against heavy pressure.
