Starting Lineup

Arsenal relies on high pressing and controlled possession to dominate games with a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup aims to squeeze the pitch and control the ball in the middle third, using a heavy overload to control the tempo. The goal is to win the ball high up the pitch and quickly progress through the thirds to catch the opposition out of position.

David Raya acts as the last line of defense, often playing short from the back to start the build up. The defensive unit consists of a narrow two man center back pairing with Saliba and G. Magalhães. Saliba uses his pace and recovery ability to cover space, while G. Magalhães provides aerial strength and dominance in the air. This small back line relies on the midfielders to protect the space in front of them to avoid being stretched by long balls.

The midfield is the engine room of Arsenal, operating in a dense five man unit. Timber and Calafiori sit as a double pivot to shield the defense and provide security. Rice acts as a carrier to drive forward with the ball, while Zinchenko moves into central areas to help recycle possession. Ødegaard operates in the pocket behind the striker, using his passing range to split the defense with a through ball. This central block makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle.

In the attacking phase, the team uses three attackers to pin the last defender. Havertz acts as the focal point, using his height to win the header and hold up the ball for others. Saka stays wide on the right to stretch the defense, while G. Jesus cuts inside from the left to create space for others to run into. The team looks to combine in tight spaces to move the ball toward the goal, often looking for runs in behind or cutbacks from the byline.

A major advantage of this Arsenal formation is the massive numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. By packing the center with five players, they can win the second ball and immediately transition. The wide players like Saka can also isolate a one on one situation when the opposition is forced to narrow their defensive block to deal with the midfield congestion.

This highly aggressive formation is designed to pin opponents into their own half and dominate the ball. It is best suited for games where Arsenal wants to dictate play against teams that defend in a low block.
