Starting Lineup

Raum · Kimmich · Rüdiger · Süle · Havertz · Gündogan · Goretzka · Musiala · Wirtz · Sané · ter Stegen

Germany adopts a highly vertical and aggressive identity in this 2-5-3 formation. The team aims to dominate the ball and push the opposition deep into their own half through a constant high press. This lineup is built to play a direct style of football that looks to break the line as quickly as possible once possession is regained.

ter Stegen operates as the goalkeeper, often playing short from the back to start attacks. The defensive unit uses a very high line with only two central defenders, Süle and Rüdiger. These two must act as ball playing defenders who can carry the ball forward into the middle third. They must be dominant in the air and show great awareness to sweep behind the high line if the opposition hits in behind. The two defenders have to be extremely mobile to cover the wide areas when the midfielders push forward.

In the middle of the pitch, a five man midfield provides the core of the team. Kimmich and Raum occupy the wide positions in the midfield, with Kimmich using his exceptional passing range to switch play and Raum providing coverage on the left. Gündogan and Goretzka work in the central channels, where Goretzka drives forward with the ball and Gündogan works to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Musiala plays as an attacking ten, roaming in the half spaces to receive on the half turn and play through the lines. This midfield unit works to win the second ball and trigger a press whenever the ball enters their zone.

The attacking front three is designed to stretch the defense and create constant chaos. Havertz acts as a lone striker who can hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. Wirtz and Sané operate as inverted wingers who cut inside to create central overloads. This movement allows the team to attack in combinations, with Wirtz and Sané looking to find the feet of the striker or deliver early balls into the box. The forwards press the opposition back line aggressively to force a long ball, allowing the midfield to intercept and counter at pace.

This formation offers immense numerical superiority in the center of the pitch, making it very hard for opponents to deny the pivot or control the game. The combination of five midfielders allows Germany to recycle possession and squeeze the space effectively. Another strength is the ability to isolate wide players in one on one situations once the central area is congested. The movement of Musiala between the lines also makes it difficult for the opposition to pick up runners.

This aggressive lineup is designed to suffocate opponents through intense pressure and central dominance. It is most effective when facing teams that sit deep and struggle to handle rapid verticality.
