Maignan plays between the posts to organize the back line. The defense operates as a back three with Granit Xhaka acting as the central figure who holds the line and organizes the unit. J. Dodo and Udogie act as attacking wing backs who push high up the pitch to provide width. When defending, they drop back to form a five man block that is very difficult to penetrate.

In the middle of the park, Milan use a three man midfield to control the tempo. Youssouf Fofana works to shield the defense and win the second ball, while D. Ceballos connects the defensive and attacking lines with his passing. Pulisic plays as an attacking ten behind the strikers, finding pockets of space to create chances. This midfield unit is designed to press aggressively to win the ball high and then quickly find the forwards.

The attack relies on a two man partnership of Rafa Leao and Vlahovic. Rafa Leao uses his dribbling style and pace to drive at defenders, often cutting inside from the left. Vlahovic acts as the primary presence up top, looking to win the header or find space in the box. These two forwards press the opposition back line to force errors. The movement is designed to create runs in behind or allow the wing backs to deliver crosses into the box during transitions.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages through wide overloads when Dodo and Udogie push forward. Milan can also achieve numerical superiority in midfield when Pulisic joins the central trio. The compactness when defending makes it hard for opponents to find passing lanes between the lines.

The 5-3-2 formation allows Milan to be defensively solid while remaining lethal on the counter. It is a setup best suited for games against teams that play with a high line and leave space behind their defenders.
