Starting Lineup

Mert Günok · Osayi · Cerny · Rafa Silva · Gedson · Romulo · Emirhan · Mandava · Bajo · Lindelöf · Dorgu

Besiktas relies on a heavy vertical style that aims to overwhelm the opposition through sheer numbers. This high intensity game is built around a 2-4-4 formation. The goal is to squeeze the pitch and use rapid transitions to catch the opponent out of position.

Mert Günok stays between the posts to manage the defense. The lineup features a very narrow back two consisting of Emirhan and Lindelöf. Lindelöf uses his aerial strength and positional awareness to manage the high line. Emirhan must be ready to cover and track runners if the defense is bypassed. Because there are no traditional full backs, Osayi and Mandava have to drop deep to help protect the center when the team sits in a mid-block.

The midfield is comprised of a four man unit that connects the back line to the heavy attack. Gedson acts as a central engine who can carry the ball forward with his immense energy and pressing intensity. He works alongside Bajo to win the second ball and shield the defense. Osayi and Mandava occupy the wide areas to provide width and help recycle possession. This unit must be ready to shift across the pitch to close down passing lanes.

Up front, the team employs four attackers to pin the last defender. Dorgu and Cerny operate from wide positions to stretch the defense. Dorgu looks to cut inside and create chances, while Cerny looks to get to the byline. Rafa Silva plays in a mobile role, using his dribbling and ability to play through the lines to find teammates. Romulo provides a physical presence to hold up the ball and allow others to arrive late into the box. The attack is designed to create runs in behind and use quick combinations.

This formation offers significant numerical superiority in the final third. By committing four players to the attack, Besiktas can press from the front in coordinated waves to win it back high up the pitch. The ability to hit in behind on the transition makes this team very dangerous. Furthermore, the wide players can create overloads by combining with the midfield to bypass the opposition midfield block.

This high pressing 2-4-4 formation is designed for dominance and rapid attacking movements. It is most effective when playing against teams that sit deep and allow Besiktas to exploit the space behind their defensive line.
