Milan aims to play with a high press and quick transitions using a 5-3-2 formation. The team looks to remain compact and strike quickly once they win the ball back. This lineup is built to defend deep and then use the pace of the attackers to exploit the space behind the opposition back line.

Suzuki stays between the posts to command the area. The defensive unit uses a back five that can shift to cover the width of the pitch. N. Caviglia sits in the middle of the three centre-backs to anchor the line. J. Bijol and Mosquera play as the left and right centre-backs to provide cover and win headers. Cambiaso operates as an attacking wing back on the left to push high and provide width. Jimenez plays as the right wing back to overlap the midfield. This back five works to squeeze the space and force the opponent to the flanks.

The midfield consists of a three-man unit that works to control the center. Youssouf Fofana plays as a carrier who can drive the ball forward into the attacking third. Adrien Rabiot works in the left half-space to connect the defense to the front line and recycle possession. Pulisic acts as the attacking ten behind the two strikers to find space between the lines. Fofana and Rabiot help to shield the defense and pick up runners in front of the back five. They are tasked to win the ball high and immediately look to play through the lines.

Up front, Milan utilizes a two-man partnership to pressure the opposition. Rafa Leao plays as a left striker and uses his dribbling to beat players in one on one situations. Santiago Gimenez plays as the right striker to hold up the ball and lead the press from the front. Pulisic drops into the hole to act as a link between the midfield and the forwards. The team looks to create runs in behind and use the width from Cambiaso and Jimenez to deliver crosses. They often look to hit in behind on the transition to catch the defense out of position.

A primary advantage of this formation is the ability to maintain compactness when defending. The back five and the midfield trio make it very difficult for opponents to find gaps in the center. Milan also benefits from the speed of transition when they can move the ball quickly to Leao and Gimenez. The wide players can also create overloads by pushing up the pitch.

This 5-3-2 formation is built for teams that want to be defensively solid and lethal on the break. It is most effective against opponents that play a high line and leave space behind.
