Liverpool Football Formation
Starting Lineup
RIISE · AGGER · CARRAGHER · FINNAM · ALONSO · MASCHERANO · ZENDEN · PENNANT · GERRARD · KUYT · REINALiverpool relies on a heavy defensive presence to launch quick breaks in this 5-4-1 formation. The lineup focuses on being hard to break down through a deep defensive block. This system is built to sit deep and then move the ball forward quickly to catch the opponent out of position.
REINA stays between the posts to organize the back line. A back five provides a narrow defensive block with MASCHERANO sitting in the middle to protect the area. CARRAGHER acts as a right centre-back to win the header and cover space, while AGGER plays as a left centre-back to play out from the back. RIISE operates as a left wing back to provide width and overlap, whereas FINNAM works as a right wing back to push up the flank. The unit works together to squeeze the space and deny the turn to strikers.
The midfield consists of a four man unit that links the defence to the attack. ALONSO sits as a single pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. GERRARD plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to make late runs into the box and drive forward with the ball. PENNANT and ZENDEN occupy the central midfield roles to connect the lines and win the second ball. ALONSO helps to cut off the passing lane to the opposition attackers while GERRARD uses his passing range to find teammates.
A lone striker, KUYT, leads the line as a pressing centre-forward. He works to harass the opposition back line and hold up the ball until help arrives. The attack relies on transitions where RIISE and FINNAM push high to provide width. KUYT often drops deep to link up play between the lines or makes runs in behind the defenders. This creates opportunities to counter at pace and find space in the channels.
This formation offers great compactness when defending in a mid-block. Liverpool can win it back high up the pitch if the front four trigger a press. A major advantage is the ability to use wide overloads from RIISE and FINNAM when they join the midfield. The team also utilizes speed of transition to catch opponents during the move from defence to attack.
The 5-4-1 formation is a defensive lineup designed to absorb pressure and strike on the break. It is best suited for matches against teams that hold a lot of possession.
