Ajax Football Formation
Starting Lineup
SILLOY · BLIND · BOGARDE · F. DE BOER · R. DE BOER · DAVIDS · MUSAMPA · KENU · GEORGE · LITMANEN · VAN DER SARAjax plays a game centered on a high press and quick ball movement using a 3-4-3 formation. This lineup focuses on winning the ball back high up the pitch to keep the pressure on the opposition. The team seeks to control the tempo by keeping the ball and moving the opponent around to find gaps.
VAN DER SAR operates between the posts to manage the back line. A back three consisting of BLIND, SILLOY, and BOGARDE forms the defense. BLIND sits in the center as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back. SILLOY and BOGARDE play as wide centre-backs, with BOGARDE covering the left and SILLOY covering the right. They stay narrow to defend zonally and protect the central area. The unit can step up to catch attackers offside and keep the line high.
The midfield works to bridge the gap between the defense and the attack. F. DE BOER, DAVIDS, and R. DE BOER sit in the middle to control the center. To break the lines, DAVIDS drives forward with the ball. F. DE BOER and R. DE BOER help shield the defense and win the second ball. LITMANEN plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to receive on the half-turn and play through the lines. This group works to squeeze the space in the middle.
The front line features three attackers working in tandem. KENU leads the line as a pressing centre-forward to harass the opposition defenders. MUSAMPA and GEORGE operate in wide positions. MUSAMPA can cut inside to create overloads, while GEORGE stretches the defense by pulling wide. They look to play one-twos to move past defenders and hit in behind on the transition. The wingers look to get to the byline and whip it in for KENU to attack the near post or far post.
One advantage for Ajax is the ability to press in coordinated waves, which makes it hard for opponents to play out from the back. The formation also allows for wide overloads when the midfielders and attackers combine. This creates space for the wingers to isolate defenders in one on one situations.
This 3-4-3 formation is built for aggressive, high pressing football. It is most effective when facing teams that struggle to bypass a high press.
