A double pivot forms the heart of the midfield. The LCM and RCM occupy the central space to shield the defence and win the second ball. One midfielder must drop between the centre backs to receive when playing short from the back, while the other acts as a carrier to drive forward with the ball. This pair connects the defence to the attacking line by recycling possession and protecting against long balls.

The attacking unit utilizes two wide wingers and two central players. The LW and RW stay wide to stretch the defence, often looking to cut inside and find the feet of the striker. The CAM plays as a second striker in the hole to link up play between the lines, while the STR acts as a pressing centre forward to harass the opposition back line. This front four works to create runs in behind and move in combinations to split the defence with a through ball.

Fulham gains a tactical advantage by creating wide overloads when the LB and RB overlap the wingers. The formation also allows for the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it difficult for opponents to play out from the back.
