Milan Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Maignan · Tomori · Gabbia · Theo · Emerson Royal · Fofana · Loftus Cheek · Pulisic · Leao · Chukwueze · GimenezMilan play a highly vertical and aggressive style of football using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the center of the pitch and squeeze the space in the opponent's half. The team aims to win the ball back high up the pitch and strike quickly. By committing so many players forward, Milan aim to overwhelm the opposition through sheer numbers in the attacking third.
Maignan stays between the posts to organize the defense. Tomori and Gabbia form a narrow back two that sits in a very high line to keep the team compact. Tomori uses his pace to cover for his partner, while Gabbia focuses on winning headers and clearing the lines. These two must stay connected to avoid being split by through balls, often stepping up to trigger a press or intercept passes.
The midfield contains five players who control the rhythm of the game. Theo and Emerson Royal sit in the pivot roles to shield the defense and stop counter attacks. Fofana and Loftus Cheek provide the energy to press in a mid block or drive forward with the ball into the half spaces. Pulisic plays as the attacking ten, using his ability to receive on the half turn and play through the lines to connect the midfield to the strikers.
Up front, the team uses three attackers to pin the last defender. Leao and Chukwueze operate as wide players to stretch the defence. Leao often cuts inside from the left to use his dribbling and explosive pace, while Chukwueze looks to get to the byline and whip it in. Gimenez plays as the central striker to hold up the ball and link up play between the lines. This front three works together to press from the front and force a long ball.
A major strength of this formation is the massive numerical superiority in the midfield. The presence of five players allows Milan to recycle possession easily and win the second ball in central areas. The wide players and midfielders can also create wide overloads to isolate one on one situations for the wingers. This creates a constant threat of a quick break when the team can hit in behind on the transition.
This 2-5-3 formation is a heavy attacking system designed to suffocate the opposition. It is most effective when facing teams that prefer to play short from the back and cannot handle a high press.
