This lineup seeks to win the ball high up the pitch and use the verticality of the forward line to punish opposition defenses. By maintaining a heavy presence in the attacking third, the team aims to control the tempo through aggressive ball recovery.
Donnarumma acts as the last line of defense, often sweeping behind a high line to cover any long balls sent over the defense. The back three consists of Vitinha, Pacho, and Zabarny, who work as a unit to defend zonally. Vitinha acts as a ball playing defender to start attacks, while Pacho and Zabarny provide strength to win the header and clear the lines. On the flanks, Nuno and Hakimi function as attacking wing backs, pushing high to provide width and support the press.
A two man midfield serves as the engine room for PSG. B. Fernandes and Joao Neves work in a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. B. Fernandes sits deeper to shield the defense and recycle possession, while Joao Neves is able to carry the ball forward to link the defensive and attacking lines. This pairing must be disciplined to avoid being bypassed in the middle, ensuring they can quickly recover if the initial press is broken.
The attacking trident uses three attackers across the front to stretch the defense. Dembele operates as a central striker, looking to find the feet of the striker or turn defenders in tight spaces. On the wings, Doue and Kvara act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create goalscoring chances. These players are tasked to press from the front, forcing the opposition back line into mistakes. The movement of the wingers creates space for Nuno and Hakimi to overlap the winger and deliver crosses.
One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads from overlapping full backs. When Nuno and Hakimi push up, they create numerical superiority against the opponent's full backs. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the three attackers can immediately hit in behind on the transition once the midfield wins the ball. The compactness of the back five also makes the team very hard to break down when they sit deep.
This 5-2-3 formation is built to dominate games through high intensity and rapid vertical attacks. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to exploit space behind a high defensive line.
