Starting Lineup

De Gea · Romero · Bastoni · Dumfries · Cancelo · Kovacic · De Paul · Barella · Lautaro · Thuram · de Vrij

Inter relies on a heavy high press and quick transitions through a 3-5-2. This formation is built to control the middle of the pitch and use the width of the wingbacks to stretch the opposition. The Inter lineup aims to win the ball high up the pitch to catch opponents before they can get organized.

De Gea guards the goal as the last line of defense. The back three consists of de Vrij, Romero, and Bastoni. Bastoni acts as a ball playing defender who can step into midfield to create an extra man, while Romero provides aerial strength and physical presence. de Vrij covers the space behind and maintains the line. This defensive unit stays compact to squeeze the space between the lines when the team sits in a mid-block.

In the center, Kovacic operates as a single pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. He sits deep to protect the three center backs and provides a calm link to the rest of the team. Barella and Cancelo play as the left side of a three man midfield, with Barella pressing aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch. Dumfries and De Paul move into the half spaces to connect the midfield to the attack. This group works to win the second ball and carries the ball forward into the final third.

The attack features a partnership of two forwards in Lautaro and Thuram. Lautaro works as a pressing centre forward to harass the opposition back line, while Thuram uses his power to hold up the ball and wait for support. They often play in combinations to find gaps in the defense. The wingbacks, Cancelo and Dumfries, provide width by pushing high to overlap the midfielders. This movement creates runs in behind and allows the forwards to receive the ball in tight spaces.

A major strength of this Inter lineup is the numerical superiority in midfield which allows them to dominate the center. The team can also create wide overloads through the movement of Dumfries and Cancelo. The ability to press in coordinated waves makes it difficult for opponents to play out from the back.

This 3-5-2 setup is a powerful tool for dominating possession and attacking with intensity. It is best suited for games against teams that try to play a high line or leave space behind their midfield.
