Universitario relies on a heavy press and quick verticality using a 3-5-2. This formation allows the team to control the central areas while remaining dangerous when they win the ball in high areas. The lineup is built to win the second ball and push the opposition back through constant pressure.

Carlos Cáceda plays between the posts to start the build up. The defensive line uses a back three to maintain compactness. Matías Di Benedetto sits in the center to win the header and command the box. He is flanked by Aldo Corzo on the right and Williams Riveros on the left. Aldo Corzo acts as a wide centre-back to cover the space when the midfield pushes up, while Williams Riveros provides cover to help the team defend zonally.

The midfield operates with a three man midfield with a carrier to connect the lines. Rodrigo Ureña and Jean Toledo form a double pivot to shield the defence and protect the back three. Jairo Concha plays as an advanced midfielder to help win the ball high up the pitch. Mathías Llontop and Alejandro Ramos operate in the half spaces to drive forward with the ball and create passing lanes. This central block works to squeeze the space and deny the turn to opposition playmakers.

Universitario uses two forwards in a partnership to stretch the defence. José Rivera and Alex Valera work as a pair to press the opposition back line and force a long ball. They often look to hit in behind on the transition to catch the defenders out of position. The forwards combine in tight spaces to play one two passes and move the ball toward the goal. Their movement is designed to create runs in behind and allow the midfielders to arrive late into the box.

One advantage of this setup is the numerical superiority in midfield which allows Universitario to control the tempo. The back three provides a solid base that allows the midfielders to press in pairs without leaving the centre exposed. Another strength is the ability to transition quickly from a mid block to an attacking phase.

This 3-5-2 formation is designed for a team that wants to dominate the central channel and press aggressively. It is best suited for matches against opponents who try to play out from the back through the middle.
