Chelsea plays with a high press and a vertical identity. The team operates in a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and strike quickly before the opposition can get organized. It focuses on pushing the opposition back into their own half and using the width of the pitch to stretch the defence.

SANCHEZ stands between the posts to command his area. The defensive unit sits in a flat back four. JAMES acts as an attacking full back, looking to overlap the winger and provide width on the right. CUCCURELA does the same on the left to stretch the play. In the middle, SARR and COLWILL defend zonally. COLWILL is a ball playing centre back who can play out from the back. They must hold the line and cover for the full backs when they push up.

The midfield works as a double pivot to hold the centre of the pitch. CAICEDO and LAVIA are tasked with protecting the two centre backs. High pressing intensity comes from CAICEDO to win the ball back immediately. LAVIA works to recycle possession and cover the space left behind the advancing full backs. This duo must intercept passes and deny the pivot of the opposition to keep the game in the attacking third. They act as the engine to connect the back four to the front four.

The front line is extremely aggressive with wide attackers and two central forwards. MADEKE stays wide on the left but likes to cut inside to challenge the far post. PALMER operates on the right, using his elite dribbling style to pull wide and then drive into the box. In the centre, DELAP and ENZO work as the two strikers. DELAP can hold up the ball to allow others to join the attack, while ENZO plays as a second striker to find the feet of the striker or arrive late into the box. They press the opposition back line to force a long ball.

This formation offers massive attacking presence. Chelsea can create wide overloads when JAMES and CUCCURELA push high alongside the wingers. The team can also win it back high up the pitch through coordinated pressing waves from the four forwards and the two midfielders. The team achieves a very fast speed of transition once the ball is recovered.

This 4-2-4 lineup is designed to dominate through aggressive pressing and verticality. It is best used against opponents who struggle to play out from the back or those who defend in a narrow block.
