Starting Lineup

Keeper · Jesse · Mees · Thijs · Tijmen · Mikey · Oskar · Tjebbe · Ryan · Moos · Axel

Netherlands plays with a heavy focus on direct play and high pressing in a 4-4-2. This formation is built to hunt for the ball high up the pitch and strike quickly when the opposition loses control. The team wants to win the ball back high up the pitch to catch the opponent out of position.

Keeper acts as the last line of defense behind a flat back four. Jesse operates as the right back, providing width while Tijmen covers the left side. In the middle of the defense, Mees and Thijs work together to defend zonally. Mees and Thijs must stay close to each other to cover the space and protect the goalkeeper, often stepping up to squeeze the space when the team moves forward.

The midfield works as a central block designed to control the middle of the pitch. Mikey sits in the center to connect the defensive and attacking lines, while Oskar and Moos act as inverted eights who support both defense and attack. Tjebbe plays as an attacking ten behind the strikers to create chances in the half spaces. Mikey helps to shield the defense, while Oskar and Moos carry the ball forward to link with the front line. Tjebbe looks to find pockets of space to play through the lines.

The attacking unit consists of two forwards, Axel and Ryan, who work in a partnership. Axel and Ryan often press the opposition back line to force a long ball or a mistake. They combine in tight spaces to move the ball toward the goal, with one striker often dropping deep to hold up the ball while the other makes runs in behind. The width comes from the full backs, Jesse and Tijmen, who push up to support the attack and provide crosses.

One major advantage for Netherlands is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, with Tjebbe and the two strikers leading the hunt. The formation also offers compactness when defending in a mid-block, making it hard for opponents to play through the center. This setup allows the team to quickly transition from a defensive block into a rapid counter at pace.

The 4-4-2 lineup provides a balanced platform for both intense pressing and rapid counter attacks. This formation is best suited for matches against teams that struggle to play out from the back under pressure.
