Parente work to win the header and clear the lines, while L. Sanabria provides cover for any runs made in behind. J. Paintsil and G. Pec act as attacking wing backs, meaning they must track back to help the center backs but also push high to provide width. This defensive unit shifts as a single block to keep the gaps between players small.

In front of the defense, the midfield sits in a flat four to control the central zones. Zanka and M. Yoshida form a central pairing where Yoshida acts to shield the defense and Zanka looks to win the second ball. M. Yamane and J. Nelson occupy the wide areas to help the wing backs and press in a mid-block. This group works to compress the midfield and prevent the opponent from playing through the lines. They look to intercept passes and immediately look to spread wide once they win possession.

The attack is built around a lone striker, N. Micovic, who must hold up the ball to allow the midfield to move up the pitch. Micovic works to pin the last defender and create space for the runners behind him. When LA Galaxy transitions, the wing backs J. Paintsil and G. Pec push up to support the lone frontman. The team relies on quick combinations and long balls to find Micovic or the wide players in behind the opposition defense.

One major strength of this formation is the compactness when defending, making it very difficult for opponents to find gaps between the lines. The team also creates wide overloads when the wing backs join the midfielders in the attacking third. This setup allows LA Galaxy to defend deep and then use the speed of transition to catch opponents out of position.
