Starting Lineup

Lautaro · Messi · J. Álvarez · Mac Allister · de Paul · E. Fernández · Tagliafico · Molina · Pezzella · Romero · Martínez

Argentina looks to win the ball high and strike with speed using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to play a vertical style of football that transitions quickly from a compact defensive unit to an attacking wave. The team looks to use the width of the pitch to stretch the defence before finding the gaps in the middle.

Martínez stays in goal to organize the back five. The defensive unit consists of E. Fernández, Pezzella, and Romero who form a strong central line to defend the box. Romero and Pezzella are dominant in the air and work to cover the space behind the wing backs. Tagliafico and Molina act as attacking wing backs, pushing high to provide width and support the attack. This unit can drop into a low block to deny the turn or step up to catch opponents offside.

The midfield consists of a two man unit with Mac Allister and de Paul. Mac Allister works to connect the defensive line to the attack by receiving on the half-turn and playing through the lines. de Paul acts as the engine, pressing aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch and carrying the ball forward to drive the team into the final third. They must work hard to cover the center and protect the back five when the team is out of possession.

Up front, the team uses three attackers to pin the opposition back. Lautaro plays as a pressing centre-forward, working to win the second ball and find the feet of his teammates. J. Álvarez plays wide on the left to make runs in behind, while Messi operates on the right as an inverted winger who cuts inside to create space. This allows the wing backs to overlap the winger and deliver crosses. The front three press the opposition back line to force a long ball.

A strength for La Albiceleste is the ability to create wide overloads. When Tagliafico and Molina push up, they create extra numbers to overwhelm the opposition flanks. The team also shows ability to press in coordinated waves, using the front three to trigger the press. This makes it very hard for opponents to play out from the back.

This 5-2-3 formation offers a balance of defensive compactness and rapid transition play. It is ideal for facing teams that want to dominate possession by forcing them into a mid-block.
