Starting Lineup
Oblak (Musso) · Gímenez (Galán) · Le Normand (Witsel) · Lenglet (Azpilicueta) · Mandava (Lemar) · Molina (S.Lino) · De Paul (Barrios) · Gallagher (Llorente) · Koke (Riquelme) · Álvarez (Sørloth) · Griezman (Correa)Prioritizing defensive solidity and quick transitions, Atlético play a 3-5-2 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and wait for the opposition to overcommit before hitting them on the break. The team relies on a compact block to deny space between the lines and uses a high level of intensity to win the ball back in central areas.
Jan Oblak guards the goal as the last line of defense. The back three consists of Lenglet, Le Normand, and Gímenez, who form a narrow defensive block. Le Normand acts as the central figure to anchor the defense, while Gímenez and Lenglet cover the spaces to the left and right. This unit focuses on winning headers and clearing the lines when under pressure. They tend to drop into a low block when the team is out of possession to ensure they are not caught out by long balls.
The midfield works to control the center of the pitch through a three man midfield with a carrier. Koke operates in the hole to connect the defensive and attacking lines, while De Paul and Gallagher occupy the central spaces to press aggressively and win the ball high up the pitch. De Paul uses his passing range to transition the play, while Gallagher provides energy to track back and cover ground. On the flanks, Molina and Mandava act as wide midfielders who provide the necessary width to stretch the defense.
In the attacking phase, Atlético use two forwards in a partnership to exploit gaps in the opposition line. Álvarez acts as a pressing centre-forward to lead the hunt from the front, while Griezman plays as a second striker in the hole to link play. The team looks to move the ball quickly through the middle to find the strikers. When the ball goes wide, Molina and Mandava push up to provide crosses, creating opportunities for Álvarez and Griezman to attack the near post or far post.
One major advantage for Atlético is the ability to compress the midfield and make it very difficult for opponents to play through the center. The presence of De Paul and Gallagher allows the team to press in pairs and force long balls from the opposition. Additionally, the formation allows for quick transitions where the wingers can immediately spread wide to catch the defense out of position.
This 3-5-2 formation is designed for teams that want to stay compact and strike with speed. It is best suited for matches against ball dominant sides that can be punished in transition.
