Focusing on a compact defensive block and quick transitions, Atlético play a classic 4-4-2. This formation is built to sit deep when out of possession and then hit the opposition with verticality when they win the ball. The goal for Atlético is to remain difficult to break down while creating chances through direct movement and clever link up play.

Jan Oblak guards the goal, providing a reliable presence behind the back line. The defense operates as a flat back four with Clément Lenglet and Robin Le Normand acting as the central defenders. Lenglet focuses on his positioning while Le Normand uses his aerial strength to win the header during defensive set pieces. Marcos Llorente plays as a right back, often tasked to track back and cover wide areas, while Jordi Galan provides width from the left. The unit works to hold the line and maintain a narrow defensive block to deny space between the lines.

The midfield is composed of two banks of four that work to squeeze the space in the center. Rodrigo de Paul and Pablo Barrios form a central pairing where Barrios helps to shield the defense while de Paul carries the ball forward to link the lines. On the flanks, Santiago Lino and Giovanni Simeone occupy the wide areas to provide width and track back when needed. This midfield unit focuses on winning the second ball and pressing in a mid-block to force the opponent into mistakes.

Up front, the team utilizes two forwards working in a partnership. Antoine Griezmann operates as a mobile striker who often drops into midfield to receive on the half-turn and pull defenders out of position. Julian Alvarez works alongside him as a pressing centre-forward, using his high intensity to hunt the ball. This duo creates movement through runs in behind and quick combinations in tight spaces. The attack relies on the ability to play through the lines and deliver crosses into the box after winning possession high up the pitch.

One major advantage for Atlético is the compactness when defending, making it very hard for opponents to find passing lanes through the middle. The formation also allows for speed of transition, as the team can quickly switch play to the wide players once the ball is won. The presence of Griezmann and Alvarez allows the team to pin the last defender and create much space for the midfield to arrive late into the box.

This 4-4-2 formation is designed to be defensively solid and lethal on the counter. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession but struggle to break down a disciplined low block.
