Ulsan Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Jo Hyeon-woo (Jo Su-hyeok) · Lee Myung-jae (Kim Kee-hee) · Kim Young-gwon (Hwang Seok-ho) · Lim Jong-eun (Kim Ju-hwan) · Sim Sang-min (Kang Min-woo) · Jung Woo-young (Ko Seung-beom) · Matheus Sales (Lee Gyu-sung) · Esaka (Kim Min-woo) · Ludwigson (Arabidze) · Um Won-sang (Choi Kang-min) · Joo Min-kyu (Yago Cariello)Ulsan relies on a high press and quick transitions through a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and use verticality to catch opponents out of position. The team aims to disrupt the opposition build up and move the ball forward rapidly once possession is regained.
Jo Hyeon-woo guards the goal and acts as the last line of defense. The defensive unit operates as a flat back four where Sim Sang-min plays as the right back and Lee Myung-jae occupies the left back position. In the center, Kim Young-gwon and Lim Jong-eun form the defensive pairing. Kim Young-gwon uses his experience to command the line, while Lim Jong-eun covers space to prevent runs in behind. They work together to hold the line and ensure the team stays compact when defending.
The midfield consists of a double pivot with Jung Woo-young and Matheus Sales sitting in front of the defense. Jung Woo-young shields the back four and breaks up play, while Matheus Sales helps to recycle possession. Ahead of them, Esaka and Ludwigson occupy the central spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Um Won-sang provides additional support in the midfield area to help press aggressively and win the second ball. This group works to squeeze the space between the lines and ensure the midfield remains difficult to bypass.
Joo Min-kyu leads the attack as a lone striker. He acts as a target man to hold up the ball and bring others into play. The wide midfielders push up to support him, often creating combinations to break the line. While Joo Min-kyu pins the last defender, the midfield players make runs to support the attack. The team looks to move the ball quickly to the wings to whip it in or find the feet of the striker in central areas.
One major advantage for Ulsan is the ability to press high in coordinated waves with the midfield and forward line. This creates pressure that forces mistakes from the opposition. Another strength is the speed of transition, allowing the team to hit in behind on the transition before the opponent can reset. The compact midfield also makes it difficult for teams to find passing lanes through the center.
This 4-5-1 formation provides a balance of defensive solidity and attacking intent. It is best suited for facing teams that want to dominate possession by forcing them into mistakes through heavy pressing.
