Starting Lineup

Mihaylov · Douglas · Wisgerhof · Rosales · Tiendalli · Brama · Fer · Tadic · Ruiz · Ziyech · L. De Jong

FC Twente aims to dominate through high pressing and heavy central concentration, utilizing a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to overwhelm the opposition in the middle of the pitch and create constant pressure in the final third. By pushing many players forward, the team looks to win it back high up the pitch and quickly advance toward the goal.

Mihaylov acts as the lone goalkeeper behind a very aggressive two man back line. Wisgerhof and Douglas form the central defensive pairing, where they must be ready to cover large amounts of space behind them. These two central defenders need to be dominant in the air and quick to step up to sweep behind a high line. Because there are only two defenders, they must stay compact and defend zonally to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.

The midfield unit is the engine of this FC Twente lineup, working in a five man block to control the game. Rosales and Tiendalli act as a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Brama and Fer play as inverted eights, driving forward with the ball and making late runs into the box to support the attack. Tadic operates as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find the feet of the attackers or play through the lines with his vision. This five man group allows the team to compress the midfield and win the second ball frequently.

In the attacking third, the team employs three attackers to stretch the defense. Ziyech and Ruiz act as wide wingers who cut inside to create goal scoring opportunities, while L. De Jong serves as a pressing centre-forward. The movement of Ruiz and Ziyech creates space for the midfielders to arrive late into the box. This front line is designed to play in combinations and use the width provided by the wingers to eventually whip it in or cut it back to the runners.

One major advantage of this 2-5-3 formation is the numerical superiority in midfield, which allows the team to control the tempo and dominate possession. The intense pressing from the front three can also force a long ball from the opposition, making it easier for Wisgerhof and Douglas to clear the lines. Additionally, the presence of Tadic and the attacking midfielders creates a central overload that is very difficult to mark.

This formation is a high risk, high reward system that relies on intense pressing and central dominance. It is best suited for games where FC Twente can squeeze the space and suffocate an opponent who struggles to play out from the back.
