Starting Lineup

Krätzig · Lainer · Rasmussen · Gadou · Kjærgaard · Bidstrup · Ratkov · Vertessen · Gloukh · Daghim · Zawieschitzky

RB Salzburg operates with an aggressive, vertical identity, utilizing a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to hunt the ball high up the pitch and attack with immediate speed. The main goal is to win the ball back early and move it forward to catch the opposition out of position and exploit gaps.

Zawieschitzky sits in goal to command the area. The defense works with a back two consisting of Gadou and Rasmussen. They play with a high line to squeeze the space and will often step up to intercept the ball. Gadou and Rasmussen act as ball playing defenders, looking to play short from the back to progress the play. They must be ready to cover for each other if the opposition tries to hit in behind or use the space vacated by the high line.

In the middle of the pitch, the team uses a five man unit to control the game. Krätzig and Lainer form a double pivot to shield the defense and protect the central zone. Kjærgaard and Bidstrup play as two attacking midfielders in the half spaces to link the lines. Gloukh operates as an attacking ten, looking to find pockets of space between the lines and create chances. This formation allows Krätzig and Lainer to win the second ball while Kjærgaard and Bidstrup carry the ball forward to support the attack.

The attack features three players across the front. Vertessen and Daghim act as wingers on the flanks, with Vertessen on the left and Daghim on the right. They often cut inside to create overloads or stretch the defence. Ratkov works as a pressing centre-forward, staying central to lead the line and pin the last defender. The wingers look to get to the byline and deliver crosses, while Ratkov looks to link up with his teammates or run in behind.

This lineup provides several key tactical advantages. The midfield creates constant numerical superiority, allowing the team to dominate possession and play through the lines. The team can also press in coordinated waves, using the front three and the five midfielders to trigger a press high up the pitch. Additionally, the width provided by the wingers allows the team to switch play and isolate players in one on one situations during transitions.

The 2-5-3 formation is a high intensity system for Red Bull Salzburg designed for heavy pressing and quick transitions. It is most effective against opponents that try to play out from the back and struggle to handle concentrated pressure in the middle of the pitch.
