Atlético Football Formation
Starting Lineup
OBLAK · LLORENTE · LE NORMAND · LENGLET · GALÁN (REINILDO) · SIMEONE (A. CORREA) · DE PAUL (GALLAGHER) · BARRIOS (SORLOTH) · LINO (KOKE) · J. ÁLVAREZ · GRIEZMANNAtlético play with an identity built to break quickly and hit in behind on the transition. The formation is a 4-2-4 that prioritizes a vertical style and high intensity. This lineup is designed to win the ball high up the pitch and immediately spread wide to stretch the defence.
OBLAK guards the goal, acting as a shot-stopper who can clear the lines under pressure. The back four defends zonally to maintain a narrow defensive block. LE NORMAND and LENGLET form the central pairing, with LE NORMAND using his aerial strength to win the header. LLORENTE operates as an attacking full back on the right to carry the ball forward and provide width. GALÁN plays on the left, often tracking back to cover the space when the team is out of possession. The unit works to hold the line and set the offside trap to deny the opponent space.
A double pivot manages the middle of the pitch to protect the back line. BARRIOS stays deep to win the second ball and deny the pivot of the opposition. DE PAUL works to connect the defensive and attacking lines, using his passing range to switch play or play through the lines. He often carries the ball forward to drive the team into the final third. This midfield pairing is tasked to compress the midfield and squeeze the space to prevent the opposition from playing out from the back.
The attack uses four players to press from the front and trigger a press in the opposition half. LINO and SIMEONE act as wide wingers who want to get to the byline and whip it in. LINO tends to cut inside to create overloads, while SIMEONE pulls wide to isolate the defender. GRIEZMANN and J. ÁLVAREZ operate as a forward partnership. GRIEZMANN drops deep to receive on the half-turn and play a one-two with his teammates. J. ÁLVAREZ acts as a pressing centre-forward to pin the last defender and make runs in behind.
One major advantage of this formation is the speed of transition. With four attackers already high, Atlético can hit in behind on the transition before the opposition can shift. The team also benefits from the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front four to force a long ball. This allows the team to win the ball back high up the pitch and create immediate scoring chances.
This 4-2-4 formation is built for an aggressive and vertical style of play. It is best suited for matches against opponents that play a high line and struggle to defend the space behind them.
