Starting Lineup

J. Auer · Bolla · Horn · Raux Yao · Grgic · Amane · Arnautovic · Beljo · Seidl · Jansson · N. Hedl

SK Rapid looks to play a high risk, vertical game with a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup focuses on heavy pressure and direct attacks to overwhelm the opposition. It is a formation designed to dominate the final third by committing many bodies forward to catch teams out of position.

N. Hedl stays between the posts to manage the defense from the back. The two central defenders, Horn and Raux Yao, operate in a very high line to squeeze the space in the middle of the pitch. This means they must be ready to cover large areas of grass when the ball is played behind them. They act as the last line of defense, needing to win headers and intercept long balls to prevent immediate counters. Because there are only two in the back, the unit must stay extremely compact to avoid being split by through balls.

The midfield uses a double pivot of J. Auer and Bolla to hold the center. J. Auer works to shield the defense and break up play, while Bolla looks to carry the ball forward and connect the back line to the attack. In front of them, Amane and Grgic operate in the half spaces as two attacking midfielders. Amane and Grgic move between the lines to create chances and press the opposition midfielders. This four man unit provides the engine for SK Rapid, aiming to win the ball back high up the pitch and immediately find the front four.

The attack is highly aggressive with four players pushing into the opposition half. Arnautovic and Beljo act as a two man partnership up front, where they work to find the feet of the striker and win the second ball. They use their presence to pin the last defender and create space for the wide players. Seidl and Jansson operate as wide wingers who stay wide to stretch the defense. Seidl looks to cut inside to shoot, while Jansson tries to get to the byline to deliver crosses. This front line aims to attack in combinations and use quick transitions to hit the opponent before they can settle.

One major advantage for SK Rapid is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it difficult for teams to play out from the back. The formation also creates wide overloads when the attacking midfielders and wingers combine. By having four players in the attacking line, the team can easily isolate wide players in one on one situations. This heavy focus on the attacking third makes the team very dangerous in transition.

This 2-4-4 formation is built for a high pressing, direct style of play. It is best suited for games where the team needs to chase a result or face an opponent that struggles to play under intense pressure.
