Starting Lineup

Cláudio · Martim · Zé Pedro · Marcano · Moura · Varela · Tomás · Mora · Pepê · Gabri · Samu

FC Porto aims to play with high intensity and rapid transitions using a 4-2-4. This formation is built to stretch the opposition and create scoring opportunities through a heavy front line. By pushing many players forward, the team looks to win the ball high up the pitch and hit the opponent before they can get organized.

Cláudio sits between the posts to organize the back line. The defensive unit operates as a flat back four where Martim and Moura provide the width. Martim acts as a defensive wing back to help cover the flank while Moura pushes up to support the attack. In the center, Zé Pedro and Marcano form a pairing where they must stay compact. Marcano uses his aerial strength to defend crosses, while Zé Pedro focuses on covering the space behind the midfield. They must hold the line to prevent through balls.

The midfield consists of a double pivot with Varela and Tomás working to control the middle. Varela acts as the primary shield for the defense, looking to intercept passes and win the second ball. Tomás is the carrier who drives forward with the ball to connect the defensive unit to the attack. This two man midfield must work hard to track back when the team loses possession, ensuring they do not get outnumbered in the center.

The attacking unit is extremely aggressive with four players pushing high. Samu and Gabri act as two center forwards, with Samu acting as a presence to hold up the ball and Samu and Gabri working together to pin the last defender. Mora and Pepê operate as wide attackers. Pepê tends to cut inside to create more central presence, while Mora stays wide to stretch the defence. This front line is designed to create runs in behind and deliver crosses into the box for the strikers.

This 4-2-4 lineup offers significant attacking threat by forcing the opposition to defend deep. FC Porto can create wide overloads when the full backs push up to support the wingers. The team also benefits from a high press that can force a long ball from the opposition. This constant pressure in the final third makes the team very dangerous in transition.

This formation is built for a high tempo game where the goal is to overwhelm the opponent. It is best suited for matches against teams that defend in a low block and struggle with quick, direct movements.
