Maignan guards the goal and acts as a reliable presence behind the back line. The defense functions as a back five with G. Leoni and Javi Guerra occupying the central roles to win the second ball and defend zonally. Pavlovic plays as the left centre back to cover the space behind the wing back. Jimenez operates as an attacking wing back on the right to provide width, while Zinchenko plays as a left wing back to help build play from the back. This defensive unit stays tight to deny the turn to attackers and maintain a narrow defensive block.

The midfield works as a double pivot to shield the defence. Granit Xhaka and Youssouf Fofana sit in front of the back five to intercept passes and protect the centre.
