LAFC Soccer Formation
Starting Lineup
LLORIS · PALENCIA · LONG · SEGURA · HOLLINGSHEAD · TILLMAN (MARLON) · I. JESUS (F. AMAYA) · M. DELGADO (YEBOAH) · ORDAZ (D. MARTÍNEZ .M) · EBOBISSE (GIROUD) · BOUANGALAFC focuses on a high press and rapid transitions using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and move forward quickly to catch the opposition off guard. The team looks to stay compact and use the width provided by the wing backs to stretch the defence.
LLORIS stays between the posts to command the area with his shot stopping and sweeping ability. The back line features I. JESUS, LONG, and SEGURA as a central block. I. JESUS acts as the central figure while LONG and SEGURA cover the spaces to the sides. PALENCIA and HOLLINGSHEAD operate as attacking wing backs to provide width. They push up the pitch to support the attack and track back to defend when possession is lost. This allows the back three to stay compact when the team sits deep.
The midfield is a two man pairing with TILLMAN and M. DELGADO. Both players must cover large areas of the pitch to connect the defence to the attack. One player often drops to protect the centre while the other carries the ball forward to join the front line. They work to intercept passes and win the second ball in the middle of the park. This double pivot helps to control the tempo and recycle possession when needed.
The front line features three attackers with EBOBISSE leading the way as a pressing centre forward. BOUANGA and ORDAZ operate as wide attackers to stretch the opposition. Using his dribbling and pace, BOUANGA cuts inside to create chances while ORDAZ looks to find space on the flanks. Wing backs overlap the wingers to create overloads in the final third. This movement creates runs in behind and allows the team to deliver crosses into the box.
A major strength for LAFC is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. Having three forwards allows the team to trigger a press from the front. Another advantage is the width provided by PALENCIA and HOLLINGSHEAD which helps to spread the defence. The back three provides extra security when the wing backs push high, making the team hard to break down in transition.
This 5-2-3 formation relies on intense pressing and rapid attacking movements. It is a formation best suited for facing teams that play with a high line or struggle to play out from the back.
