The midfield relies on a three man unit to link the defence and attack. Simón plays as a deep lying pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. Aliendro operates as a carrier to drive the ball forward into the half spaces, while Mastantuono plays in the pockets of space to create chances. This trio works to press in a mid block and win the second ball to start attacks. They move together to squeeze the space and deny the turn of the opposition midfielders.

The attacking unit uses two forwards in a partnership. Borja acts as a target man to hold up the ball and use his aerial strength to win headers. Colidio plays as a second striker who makes runs in behind the last defender to exploit the space. The wing backs, Acuña and Montiel, overlap the wide midfielders to deliver crosses into the box. This creates many opportunities for Borja to attack the near post or the far post through quick combinations.

One main advantage for River is the numerical superiority in the central defensive zone. Having three centre backs makes it hard for opponents to find space in the middle. The team also gains wide overloads because Acuña and Montiel can push up the pitch. This allows the team to stretch the defence and isolate wide players in one on one situations. This formation is very hard to break down when playing in a low block.
