Starting Lineup

SK Rapid aims to dominate the pitch through a high press and rapid verticality using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup focuses on squeezing the space in the opponent half to win the ball back high up the pitch. By committing many players forward, the team seeks to overwhelm the opposition with constant pressure and quick combinations.

Hedl starts in goal to oversee the defensive unit. The back line is composed of a narrow two man pairing with Cvetkovic and Raux Yao acting as the central defenders. These two must be prepared to step up to set the offside trap and cover large amounts of grass behind them. Because the formation uses only two central defenders, they often have to defend man to man in wide areas if the midfield is bypassed. The unit must stay compact to prevent opponents from playing through the lines.

The midfield is a dense five man block designed to control the center of the pitch. Bolla and J. Auer operate as a double pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. Oswald and Grgic play as inverted eights to provide both width and central presence, helping to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Seidl plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to receive on the half-turn and play through the lines. This heavy midfield presence allows SK Rapid to win the second ball and keep the opposition pinned back.

In the final third, the team employs three attackers to stretch the defence. Jansson and Amane act as wide wingers who stay high to isolate opponents in one on one situations. Beljo operates as a pressing centre forward, looking to find the feet of the striker or make runs in behind. The goal is to use the width provided by the wingers to create space for Seidl to operate in the hole. When attacking, the team looks to spread wide to pull the opposition out of position before hitting in behind on the transition.

This formation offers significant advantages in terms of numerical superiority in the middle of the park. The five man midfield allows for easy wide overloads when the wingers and midfielders combine to cross the ball. Additionally, the high density of players in the center makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle without facing a coordinated press.
