Sion Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Sow (Biner) · Racioppi (Godwin) · Lavanchy (Kronig) · Hajrizi (Dubosson) · Mulazzi (Hefti) · Kololli (Miranchuk-Chipperfield) · Lukembila (Bouchlarhem) · Chouaref (Berdayes-Shala) · Nivokazi (Djokic-Stoll) · Kabacalman (Chouik-Llukes) · Baltazar (Joseph-Moulin)Sion aims to control the game through intense central density and high pressure using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and use a heavy midfield presence to overwhelm the opponent. By packing the middle of the pitch, the team looks to dominate territory and play through the lines to reach the final third quickly.
Racioppi guards the goal as the last line of defense. The defensive unit operates with a very narrow back two consisting of Sow and Hajrizi. These two central defenders must be prepared to defend large spaces behind them since the team plays with a high line. Sow and Hajrizi are required to be dominant in the air and quick to cover when the opposition hits in behind on the transition. Because there are only two defenders, they must stay compact to prevent the opposition from finding gaps between them.
The midfield is the engine of Sion, operating as a massive five man block. Mulazzi and Lavanchy act as a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Moving ahead, Baltazar and Kabacalman occupy the half spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Kololli plays as an attacking ten, sitting behind the striker to create chances and drive forward with the ball. This midfield unit is designed to squeeze the space and ensure the opponent cannot play through the center easily.
Sion utilizes three attackers across the front to stretch the opposition. Lukembila and Chouaref act as wide wingers who look to pull wide and create width, while Nivokazi operates as a lone striker. Nivokazi must hold up the ball to allow the midfielders to join the attack. The wingers aim to get to the byline and cut it back to the arriving midfielders. This attacking trio focuses on pressing the opposition back line to force a long ball and regain control.
One major advantage of this formation is the overwhelming numerical superiority in midfield. By placing five players in the middle, Sion can easily win the second ball and control the tempo of the game. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front three and the attacking midfielders to trigger a press. This puts immense pressure on the opponent and often leads to winning the ball back high up the pitch.
This 2-5-3 formation is built for aggressive, high pressing football. It is best suited for games where Sion wants to dominate possession and pin the opponent into their own half.
