In the middle of the pitch, Milan utilizes a double pivot to shield the back three. Xhaka sits in the left defensive midfield role, using his passing range to recycle possession and find teammates. Youssouf Fofana plays alongside him to win the second ball and protect the center. Ahead of them, Rafa Leao and Pulisic operate in the half spaces. Rafa Leao uses his dribbling style to carry the ball forward from the left, while Pulisic pushes from the right to connect the midfield and the attack.

The attacking phase relies on Moïse Kean acting as a lone striker. He is tasked to hold up the ball and wait for support from the advancing wing backs or the midfielders. Rafa Leao and Pulisic act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create goalscoring chances. The team builds play by finding the feet of the striker or using the wide areas to stretch the defence before delivering a cross. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.

This formation offers significant compactness when defending a lead. Milan can use the width provided by Jimenez and De Cuyper to create wide overloads during transitions.
