PSG focuses on a solid defensive foundation and quick transitions through a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup is built to play a direct style of football that relies on catching opponents in transition. By sitting in a compact block, the team can absorb pressure and then move the ball quickly to the front line.

B. LAMA plays between the posts to command the area. The defensive unit operates as a back five with three central defenders and two wing backs. T. SILVA leads the back line, using his aerial strength and positional awareness to defend the middle. L. FERNANDEZ and M. VERRATTI occupy the left and right sides of the central trio to cover the space. J. PILORGET acts as the right wing back to provide width, while MARQUINHOS operates as the left wing back to push up the flank. The unit works together to stay narrow and protect the central zones.

A three man midfield provides the link between the defense and the attack. S. SUSIC operates as the central pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. D. ROCHETEAU plays as the right central midfielder to carry the ball forward and help win the second ball. NEYMAR JR. plays on the left side of the midfield trio, using his dribbling style to find pockets of space and create chances from deep. This midfield group works to compress the space between the lines and win the ball back in a mid block.

The attack utilizes two forwards in a partnership to stretch the opposition. Z. IBRAHIMOVIC acts as the target man, using his strength to hold up the ball and bring others into play. K. MBAPPE plays as the left striker, looking to run in behind the defense and exploit space with his pace. The team builds attacks by using the wing backs to provide width, allowing the two strikers to stay central and pin the last defender. When PSG wins the ball, they look to hit in behind on the transition through direct passes.

This formation offers several tactical advantages for PSG. The three central defenders and the deep midfield trio create massive compactness when defending. The team can also create wide overloads when J. PILORGET and MARQUINHOS push high to support the forwards. These movements allow the side to transition from a deep defensive block to an attacking threat very quickly.

The 5-3-2 formation provides a robust platform for counter attacking football. It is best suited for games against dominant teams where PSG needs to sit deep and strike on the break.
